Run

27 January

Run: 18.6 mi
------------------------------------------------------
Run--Some of my long runs are like a huge "Y." I ran from home to the trail, then north, then south, then back home. The northern part of the Capital Crescent Trail is completely gooey mud. Needless to say, my splits were a bit slow! I had BAD heartburn for almost the entire run, and my left foot broke in half again at mile 11. NOT cool... I am going to start looking for another pair of shoes. Too bad they cost so much! But even in crappy conditions, 8:27 average pace for a slow long run is an improvement.

Shabbat--I read Torah this morning for the early service (7:30, ouch!), and then I ushered for the 9:15 service. I arrived home at about 1:00. I LOVE being there! It's just one way to give back to such a wonderful community and family. Some people in my synagogue even started a running club. My rabbi told me that I was his primary motivation for running a marathon, and this started a whole mini revolution within the shul!!!

Shoes--I can't find Reebok anywhere. I really want to find some new shoes! I'm looking for a shoe with some support, but a lot of forefoot cushioning. Help!

Thinking--A lot happens in anyone's life on any given day. This blog mostly documents the stuff in my life that has to do with running/triathlon/lifetime fitness. A lot of life doesn't make it into the blog. Too much craziness! But my goal isn't to run "further, faster" everyday. My goal is to develop and maintain motivation, knowledge, inspiration, mental/physical/spiritual growth through lifetime fitness and healthy lifestyle. An important source of motivation is to test myself mentally and physically, for sure. Lessons learned in triathlon and distance running are most definitely applicable to just about every part of life.

Application--Running is therapy for lots of people. I have been thinking about my friend from West Point a lot over the past few days. Only in a run can I "talk" to people I miss, relive memories, rationalize irrationality, marry emotional pain with physical pain and simcha with endorphins. "Running is real and relatively simple - but it ain't easy" ~Mark Will-Weber. Amen, brother. Running may even help me become a good rabbi (that time will come someday soon!).
